In 2012 he moved to Wilmington, NC to pursue schooling, having fallen in love with the local art and music scene. Chuck Leavell leads a double life. Known for his legendary rock and roll keyboard instrumentals, Leavell has served as an integral member of the Allman Brothers Band, as well as keyboardist and musical director of the Rolling Stones. He has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY award and been featured on a slew of successful records, including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John Mayer, and more.
While most people may be satisfied with this impressive musical career, Chuck Leavell is also a dedicated environmentalist. He and his wife Rose Lane are two-time Georgia Tree Farmers of the Year and winners of the National Outstanding Tree Farmers award. Leavell has written four books and serves on many environmental boards across the country. The same month he won a GRAMMY, he was honored as an Honorary Forest Ranger by the United States Forest Service.
Join us in welcoming the living legend, Chuck Leavell, for his Wilson Center debut on Friday, September 20th at 7:30 p.m. During this 90-minute event, Leavell will screen an abridged version of “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man,” a documentary about his life’s work. This will be followed by a moderated discussion, including storytelling and live musical renditions. Humble, engaging, and full of hope, Chuck Leavell tells his one-of-a-kind life story.

In Raleigh, the Trio performed for the Art of Cool Jazz Festival and locally at C.GRACE, Travinia, Irregardless Café, Brasa Brazilian Steakhouse and Beyu Caffe’. In Wilmington they performed for Jazz at the CAM, the Bellamy Mansion Jazz Series and regularly at Tails Piano Bar. Now in the seventh decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960’s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings, followed by his work in the 70s — with record-breaking albums such as “Headhunters” — that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P.

Hancock received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for “River: The Joni Letters,” and two 2011 Grammy Awards for the globally collaborative CD, “The Imagine Project.”

Hancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as Institute Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 2011 Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and in December of 2013, received a Kennedy Center Honor. His memoir, Herbie Hancock: Possibilities, was published by Viking in 2014, and in February 2016 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Hancock is currently in the studio at work on a new album.
